‘It’s All About The Squinch’
Meet fourteen year old Actress Amelia Bradley and her lovely Mum Justine! It’s my absolute pleasure to work with young actors. I always learn something new!! With Amelia I learnt exactly what was the perfect squinch. A term created by goodness knows who, branded by a US headshot photographer Peter Hurley. Technical described as the narrowing the distance between your eyelid and your pupil!! Amelia brought it to the session with her naturally and we had lots of fun with it. I since have tried to do the perfect squinch. Aside from looking like I’ve had several glasses of wine, it really is a lot harder than it looks!!
‘It always amazes me how grown up and prepared they are for the shoot..’
I often shoot incredibly professional young adults and it always amazes me how grown up and prepared they are for the shoot. Usually it’s their incredible mum’s who are more nervous. Having done all the research, arranged the session, booked the train tickets and packed the neatest suitcase ready for me to riffle though.
My experience is that young actors arrive to the session with a fearless attitude. Ready to enjoy themselves and get some great headshots!! There is definitely a lesson in there ‘never to grow up’ when approaching a headshot session and probably in life!!
‘Best advice I can offer..’
The best advice I can offer young actors is just be themselves and have fun with your photographer. It really is the secret to getting a good headshot. Time flies by sooo quickly, so just to ‘squinch and smile’ and be a moody teenager. These young headshots you’ll keep forever, if not you, you Mum & Dad definitely will 🙂
Embracing the wind and channeling her perfect ‘squinch’, see below for a few of Amelia’s final choices.
